The Celebrity Launch Machine: What Fame Actually Buys a Brand

Gabe Hutcheon · · 7 min read

The test for every celebrity launch: would this print with a nobody? Fame buys the first sip, the first click and the first headline. It has never once bought the second purchase.

2026 has been a parade of famous faces launching consumer brands: Kim Kardashian entering the energy aisle with Update, Conor McGregor stacking an energy drink launch on top of fight week, Tom Brady putting a coconut water called Good Nut straight onto instant delivery. Some of these will print. Some will join the celebrity brand graveyard next to the ones that had global fame, day-one sellouts and a media giant behind them, and still stalled. The difference is never the fame. It is what the fame gets poured into.

The four things fame actually buys

What fame buysWhy it mattersWhat it does NOT do
Trust collapseNew brands die on "who are you?". A famous founder skips the question.Does not survive a bad product
Pre-built distributionTens of millions of followers means day-one reach costs nothing.Does not retarget or convert by itself
Free pressEvery launch is a story; every controversy is a second story.Does not control the story
Retail leverageBuyers take the meeting. Shelves open faster.Does not drive sell-through

What fame cannot buy

A consumable brand lives or dies on the second purchase, and no amount of fame gets you that if the product tastes like regret. The graveyard cases share an autopsy report: attention with no engine underneath. No hero product. No reason to come back monthly. No funnel turning the noise into subscribers. Meanwhile launches with less famous founders keep printing, because the boring machinery was built first and the face was added as fuel.

Fame is rocket fuel. Pour it into a machine and you get scale. Pour it on the ground and you get a fire.

The nobody test

Here is the test we run on every celebrity launch, and it works on celebrity ads too. Strip the famous person out and look at what is left. Take Good Nut: remove Brady and you still have a coconut water positioned for the craving moment, hungover, post-gym, 11pm, sold where the craving gets satisfied in minutes, with a name a group chat cannot leave alone. That machine works with or without the famous bloke, so the fame multiplies it.

Now run the same test on any celebrity brand that is just a face on a normal product with a normal funnel. Remove the face and there is nothing left to multiply. Those are the ones that stall the day the press cycle moves on.

How to use this if you are not famous

Good news: the machine is the part you can copy. Hero product, a craving or routine moment you own, a funnel that captures the demand your content creates, a reason to come back. Celebrities who win are renting exactly that machine. You can build the same one and rent smaller faces, creators, to light it up. The order matters and it never changes: machine first, fame second.

Launch details referenced here are as reported in July 2026 coverage (Modern Retail on Update, launch press on Mac Energy and Good Nut). We break down brands' full ad libraries with the same engine we use at Exposure.

Frequently asked questions

Why do most celebrity brands fail?
Because fame gets poured into a business with no repeat-purchase engine underneath it. Attention without a hero product, a reason to come back monthly, and a funnel that converts noise into subscribers is a fireworks show: gorgeous for one night, cold in the morning.
What does a celebrity actually add to a brand launch?
Four things: the trust problem collapses because you already know the face, distribution arrives pre-built through their audience, press coverage is free, and retailers take the meeting. None of those buys the second purchase. Only the product does that.
How do you judge a celebrity ad or launch?
Strip the celebrity out and ask if the machine still works. If a normal creator could not print with the same script and funnel, the celebrity will not save it, they will just make the failure more expensive. Fame is a multiplier on a machine, never a replacement for one.
